The recent attack on a Hindu temple in Canada has sparked widespread condemnation from leaders in both Canada and India. On November 4, violence erupted at the temple, drawing attention not only for the act itself but also for the ongoing tensions between Canada and India.

In response to the incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed their outrage and called for the protection of places of worship.

The attack occurred amid heightened diplomatic tensions following the expulsion of six Indian diplomats from Canada. This expulsion was linked to allegations regarding the killing of a Sikh separatist leader in Canada in 2023.

Canadian officials have accused the Indian government of conducting a campaign against South Asian dissidents on Canadian soil, a claim that India has firmly denied. The situation has created a backdrop of tension that has only intensified with the recent attack.

Local law enforcement responded swiftly, arresting three individuals in Brampton, a suburb near Toronto, in connection with the vandalism. Police have stated that investigations are ongoing, and they are looking into several acts of wrongdoing related to the incident.

In a press conference, Jaishankar referred to the attack as “deeply concerning,” highlighting a pattern he believes Canada has established of making allegations without backing them up with specific evidence. His comments were made during an official visit to Canberra, emphasising the seriousness with which India views the ongoing issues.

Prime Minister Modi took to social media to voice his condemnation of the attack, describing it as a "deliberate" act against the Hindu community. He expressed that such cowardly acts of violence will not weaken India's determination.

Modi urged the Canadian government to ensure justice is served and that the rule of law is upheld, reinforcing the expectation that places of worship should be safe sanctuaries for all.

Trudeau also weighed in on the incident, labelling the violence as “unacceptable.” He stressed that every Canadian should be able to practise their faith freely and safely, underscoring the importance of protecting religious sites in a multicultural society. Trudeau's stance reflects a broader commitment to maintaining a society where diversity is celebrated and safeguarded.

Other Canadian federal party leaders joined in condemning the attack. Pierre Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party, unequivocally denounced violence directed at worshippers. He echoed the sentiment that places of worship should be protected from such acts.

Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democratic Party, expressed similar concerns, emphasising the need for de-escalation and calm in response to the violence.

The attack has raised alarms about the safety of religious communities in Canada, particularly given the context of recent diplomatic strains between India and Canada.

The vandalism at the Hindu temple not only serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by minority communities but also highlights the importance of solidarity among leaders in condemning such actions. The response from both Indian and Canadian leaders illustrates a shared commitment to safeguarding religious freedoms.
