Pakistan's Army Chief, General Asim Munir, has again made fierce statements against India, blaming New Delhi for increasing tensions in the region and threatening a strong reaction to any subsequent aggressive acts.
Speaking on Saturday at the Pakistan Naval Academy in Karachi, Munir described Pakistan as a “net regional stabiliser” and claimed that the country had responded “resolutely” to what he called “unprovoked” Indian military actions.
“Despite provocations, Pakistan displayed restraint and maturity, reaffirming its commitment to regional peace,” Munir said, while accusing India of lacking “strategic foresight” and triggering instability in South Asia.
The Army Chief's comments come after a string of provocative statements over the past few weeks, including his constant mentioning of Kashmir — a longtime point of contention between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
Recently speaking, Munir once again referring to the Kashmir issue, said, "At such a time, we must remember the sacrifices of our Kashmiri brothers who are struggling against India's illegal occupation.
He reiterated Pakistan's position, declaring, "Pakistan is a firm believer in a fair solution of the Kashmir dispute in line with United Nations resolutions and the wishes of the people of Kashmir."
Munir made his comments in just days after he had referred to Kashmir as Pakistan's "jugular vein" while speaking to members of the Pakistani diaspora. "Kashmir is our jugular vein; it will be our jugular vein; we won't forget it," he had said, heightening tensions further.
Scarcely a week since those comments, a terror attack was carried out in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, in which more than two dozen male tourists were murdered. Indian officials have accused Pakistan-based groups of masterminding the massacre.
In its aftermath, India retaliated by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty — a major diplomatic gesture that impacts communally held water.
This was in turn preceded by the initiation of Operation Sindoor, when Indian troops purportedly struck and annihilated several terror launchpads deep within Pakistani territory.
