Asma Al-Assad, wife of ousted Syrian president Basher Al-Assad, has been diagnosed with Leukemia and is been battling the aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and blood, reports said.
Reportedly she has a 50-50 chance of survival. The British-born former first lady of Syria has been kept in isolation to reduce the risk of infection as she is undergoing treatment.
The reports indicate that Asma has previously battled “breast cancer” in 2019. She declared herself cancer-free after a year of treatment. However, the Blood cancer is supposed to have reappeared after a period of remission, the report added.
Asma has recently sought exile herself in London with her children since the Syrian conflict began in 2011. Reports indicate that she has also filed for divorce from the ousted Syrian president as she is “dissatisfied” with her life in Moscow.
However, the Kremlin has categorically denied the reports of Asma seeking a divorce from her Husband Basher Al-Assad, saying "No they do not correspond to reality".
She has also allegedly applied to a Russian court seeking special permission to leave the country, with her application currently under review by Russian authorities.
Syrian President Basher Al-Assad, along with his family, fled Syria on December 8 following an 11-day rebel offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), after 13 years of civil war.
The war has killed over 680,000-700,000 and displaced more than 13 million people approximately half the pre-war population of Syria.
