At G7, Modi slams 'double standards' in fight against terrorism

At the G7 Summit in Canada, Prime Minister Modi described the Pahalgam terror strike as an attack on every Indian’s soul and urged world leaders to reject double standards on terrorism. He warned that countries supporting terror will “have to pay the price”, while advocating stronger global support for the Global South.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the G7 Outreach session in Canada, strongly condemned the recent terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, describing it as not just an attack on a town, but on the very “soul, identity, and dignity of every Indian”.

Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting chaired by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Modi called for a unified and uncompromising global approach against terrorism, cautioning against the dangers of selective morality in the international fight against extremism.

“There should be no place for double standards on terrorism,” said the Prime Minister. “The terrorist attack that happened on 22nd April was not only an attack on Pahalgam, but also on the soul, identity, and dignity of every Indian. It was an attack on the entire humanity.”

Warning to nations 'backing' terrorism

PM Modi lashed out at countries allegedly supporting or harbouring terrorism, warning that global silence or selective appeasement risked undermining democracy and peace.

“On one hand, we are quick to impose all kinds of sanctions based on our own preferences. On the other hand, countries that openly support terrorism are rewarded,” he said.

The Indian leader said such inconsistencies damaged the global commitment to combatting terrorism. “Terrorism is an enemy of humanity and stands against all countries that uphold democratic values,” he declared.

“For global peace and prosperity, our thoughts and policies must be clear – if any country supports terrorism, it will have to pay the price for it.”

Voice of the Global South

Touching upon broader geopolitical and economic concerns, the Prime Minister reiterated India’s commitment to championing the cause of the Global South — a term used to describe developing and under-represented nations disproportionately affected by global instability.

“Unfortunately, the Global South countries suffer the most from uncertainty and conflicts. They are the first to be hit by crises related to food, fuel, fertiliser, and finance,” Modi said. “India considers it its responsibility to bring the priorities and concerns of the Global South to the world stage.”

Modi’s statement came during a packed schedule at the G7 Summit, during which he also held a bilateral meeting with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, with discussions ranging from economic cooperation to regional security concerns.

His remarks on the Pahalgam terror incident follow sharp domestic criticism of the security breach and an ongoing investigation into militant networks operating in the region.
