Austin says US military will stay neutral in political matters.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently addressed the ongoing transition to the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, asserting that the military would continue to act professionally and remain apart from politics.

At a press conference in Miami, Austin expressed confidence in the ability of the military leadership to do what is right, no matter the political circumstances. He emphasised that the military would always follow lawful orders, further reinforcing the Pentagon’s commitment to ensuring a smooth and orderly handover of power.

Austin’s remarks come as the U.S. military prepares for the transition from President Joe Biden’s administration to that of President Trump. Despite the political tension surrounding Trump’s return to office, the Defense Secretary made it clear that the military would not engage in political matters.

“The U.S. military will continue to stand apart from the political arena,” Austin stated. He also reiterated that the armed forces would remain dedicated to defending the country and working with allies and partners to strengthen national security.

In a memo addressed to U.S. troops, Austin outlined the military’s unwavering commitment to professionalism and principle, emphasising that the armed forces would continue to protect the Republic and follow the civilian chain of command.

Austin’s statement also underscored the importance of maintaining support for the military from Congress. “I believe that our Congress will continue to do the right things to support our military,” he said.

During the press briefing, Austin was asked about the possibility of President Trump issuing unlawful orders during his second term. Austin reassured the public that the law is clear on what can and cannot be done with active-duty military personnel. He emphasised that military leaders are well-versed in these laws and have the resources to ensure the military stays on track.

The issue of unlawful orders has been a point of concern since Trump’s first term, particularly when he considered invoking the Insurrection Act in 2020 to deploy active-duty troops to suppress protests. Austin made it clear that the military’s top priority is to obey lawful orders and maintain its commitment to protecting the Constitution.

The question of leadership within the military also looms large as Trump prepares for his second term. Speculation is rife that Trump may replace military leaders, including General CQ Brown, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who has faced criticism from certain right-wing circles.

Austin, however, emphasised that it is the President’s prerogative to choose his military leaders. Despite this, Austin reassured the military that senior leaders would remain focused on their primary mission: defending the country and taking care of the troops.

As the transition to Trump’s second term approaches, many are left wondering how his leadership will affect both domestic and international affairs. While some have expressed concerns about the unpredictability that characterised his first term, Austin’s message to the troops and the public was one of stability and professionalism. Austin highlighted that the U.S. military would continue to perform its duties with the highest standards, regardless of the political environment.

Austin also sought to remind the troops of their core mission—to defend the United States and its Constitution. He reassured them that they would continue to be the finest fighting force in the world, a role they would continue to uphold in service to the country.

As Trump’s return to office becomes a reality, both supporters and critics await to see how the military will navigate the challenges that may arise under the new administration.
