Australia expels Iranian envoy over arson attack links.

Australia expelled the Iranian Ambassador on Tuesday, accusing Tehran of involvement in recent anti-Semitic arson attacks in Sydney and Melbourne.

This marks the first time since the Second World War that the Australian government has taken such a hostile diplomatic step against Iran.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, while briefing reporters, said Australian intelligence services had reached a "deeply disturbing conclusion" that Iran directed at least two anti-Semitic attacks.

He stated that Iranian elements were involved in an arson attack on the Kosher Café in Sydney’s Bondi suburb in October 2024, while another attack in December 2024 also bore their involvement.

Albanese confirmed that no physical injuries were reported in either incident but condemned the acts in the strongest terms.

"These were extraordinary and dangerous acts of aggression orchestrated by a foreign nation on Australian soil. These attacks were carried out to undermine the vibrancy and cohesion of the Australian community, and they are totally unacceptable,” he said.

On Tuesday morning, the Australian government declared Iranian Ambassador Ahmad Sadeghi "persona non grata" and ordered him, along with three other officials, to leave the country within seven days. Canberra has also recalled its own ambassador from Iran, effectively suspending all diplomatic operations.

Albanese further announced that Australia would move to legislate the designation of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong, issuing a travel advisory, urged Australians not to travel to Iran. "I do know that many Australians have family connections in Iran, but I urge any Australian who might be considering travelling there: please do not do so. Our message is, if you are an Australian in Iran, leave now if it is safe to do so.”

The move has surprised international observers, as Australia has maintained its embassy in Tehran since 1968.

The suspension of operations has raised concerns about escalating tensions and the possibility of a wider conflict involving Israel and Iran.
