Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Vienna on Tuesday from Moscow for a two-day visit to Austria.
He was hosted by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer for a private engagement, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the news on X, along with photographs of the two leaders together in Vienna, stating, "An important milestone in India-Austria partnership! PM Modi was hosted by Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer for a private engagement. This is the first meeting between the two leaders. Discussions on realising the full potential of bilateral partnership lie ahead."
In one of the photos, Modi is seen hugging Nehammer, and in another, the Austrian chancellor is seen clicking a selfie with the prime minister. Nehammer also posted a photo of himself and Modi on a microblogging platform, welcoming PM Modi to Austria and expressing his pleasure and honour in doing so.
He said, "Welcome to Vienna, PM Modi! It is a pleasure and honour to welcome you to Austria. Austria and India are friends and partners. I look forward to our political and economic discussions during your visit!"
Modi thanked the Austrian chancellor "for the warm welcome" and expressed his anticipation for their discussions the following day. He also stated that their nations will continue working together to further global good.
In another post on X, Modi stated, "Happy to meet you in Vienna, Chancellor Nehammer. The India-Austria friendship is strong and will get even stronger in the times to come."
It's notable that this is the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Austria in over 40 years, the last being that of Indira Gandhi in 1983.
During Modi's visit to Austria, the two countries will explore ways to further deepen their relationship and pursue closer cooperation on various geopolitical challenges.
