Bangladesh DGFI chief visits Pakistan after India trip, raising strategic concerns in New Delhi amid evolving regional security dynamics.

In a development likely to draw close scrutiny from Indian policymakers and security agencies, Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) chief Kaisar Rashid Chowdhury left for a two-day visit to Islamabad on Wednesday, less than a month after his official trip to New Delhi.

According to intelligence sources in Dhaka, Major General Chowdhury travelled on a Thai Airways flight via Bangkok and is scheduled to hold meetings with senior officials of the Pakistan Army as well as counterparts in the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). He is accompanied by three other DGFI officers.

Maj Gen Chowdhury, who was recently promoted and appointed as DGFI Director General, made his first foreign visit to India on March 1. During his two-day stay in New Delhi, he held discussions with senior Indian national security officials. However, he reportedly avoided a planned engagement with Bangladesh High Commissioner Riaz Hamidullah, who had intended to host him for dinner.

His back-to-back visits to India and Pakistan come amid heightened regional sensitivities and evolving geopolitical dynamics.

Notably, shortly after the DGFI chief’s visit to India, West Bengal police’s Special Task Force (STF) arrested two alleged assailants linked to the killing of Inquilab Mancha convenor Sharif Osman Hadi in Dhaka. The accused—identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain—were reportedly tracked using precise intelligence inputs before being apprehended in Bongaon, in North 24 Parganas district, on March 8.

Investigators believe the suspects fled Bangladesh after the December 12 shooting at Purana Paltan, crossing into India through Meghalaya before moving through Assam and eventually reaching Kolkata.

Sources in both India and Bangladesh indicated that actionable intelligence played a key role in locating the accused.

Maj Gen Chowdhury’s ongoing Pakistan visit is expected to be closely monitored in New Delhi, particularly in light of concerns regarding the Pakistan Army and ISI’s historical involvement in regional security matters. The visit also comes against the backdrop of the tenure of the Mohammad Yunus-led interim regime in Bangladesh, during which such engagements are likely to carry added strategic significance.

The development underscores the shifting contours of regional intelligence cooperation and rivalry, with implications for India’s security calculus.
