The body of a 28-year-old Hindu tea garden worker was recovered, with the hands and feet tied, from a plantation area of Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar district on Wednesday, a day before the country’s general elections, police said.
The deceased was identified as Ratan Shuvo Kar, an employee of the Champara Tea Garden under Islampur union in Kamalganj upazila. According to Kamalganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Awal, the body was discovered on Wednesday morning.
Local residents noticed the body around 10 am and informed the police. People at the scene reported it bore visible injuries and was covered in blood, leading to suspicions that Kar may have been killed elsewhere and later dumped inside the tea estate.
Family members said he had been missing since the previous night. His elder brother, Laxman Kar, said the family had been searching for him.

“We went to the garden after hearing the news and identified the body. We have no idea why he was killed,” he said, adding that the family is still in shock.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, voting began on Thursday morning in Bangladesh’s crucial general election, the first since the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during nationwide protests in August 2024.
Polling started at 7:30 am local time across 299 of the country’s 300 parliamentary constituencies and will continue until 4:30 pm. Vote counting is expected to begin shortly after polling ends. Voting in one constituency has been cancelled following the death of a candidate.
