Top Bangladesh Military Officer Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman Probed Over Coup Plot.

A senior Bangladeshi military official with alleged links to Pakistan has been placed under surveillance over suspicions of attempting a coup within the army.

Lieutenant General Faizur Rahman, who serves as Quarter Master General, has come under scrutiny after the acting Army Chief, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, received reports of his activities aimed at replacing him.

The move follows concerns raised by the Chief's secretariat about secret meetings being held by Lt Gen Faizur Rahman without official approval.

Reports suggest that he attempted to gather support from divisional commanders to challenge the leadership of the acting Army Chief. However, his efforts reportedly failed to gain sufficient backing.

In early March, he reportedly convened a meeting with key divisional commanders to discuss his plans, but the Chief’s secretariat intercepted the information. A warning was sent to top military officials, resulting in a withdrawal of support from key personnel.

Sources indicate that Lt Gen Faizur Rahman has also been engaging with leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, a group with historical ties to Pakistan, as well as Pakistani diplomats. These interactions raised further concerns, prompting General Waker-Uz-Zaman to place him under close observation.

This development comes amid growing unrest in Bangladesh, where the political climate has been increasingly volatile. Over the past few months, the country has witnessed violent protests, rioting, and vandalism.

Properties linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s family have also been targeted, including the residence of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, in Dhaka.

Last month, General Waker-Uz-Zaman addressed the deteriorating situation, stating that political instability was a key factor behind the country’s worsening law and order crisis. He also emphasised the need for unity and discipline within the armed forces, warning against internal discord.
