Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin announced the formation of an interim government and the immediate release of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia from house arrest. The interim government will hold general elections as soon as possible, he added.

Speaking during a televised address, the President revealed that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, paving the way for the dissolution of parliament and establishing an interim government.

He then announced the release of students arrested during ongoing protests, compensation for the families of victims, and assistance for the injured. The President called on political parties to normalise the law and order situation in the country and stop looting and destructive activities. The armed forces have been directed to take stern measures to protect the lives and properties of citizens, as well as state assets.

"A decision has been taken to form an interim government as soon as possible by dissolving parliament. The army will also take measures to normalise the prevailing anarchic situation," said the president, with the chiefs of the three services standing behind him.

President Shahabuddin accentuated that those involved in killings and violence will be brought to justice through impartial investigation. He urged all parties to come forward to ensure communal harmony, and security of minorities, and protect government property.

"I am directing the armed forces to take stern measures to protect the lives and properties of the people and state assets. I call upon all to come forward to ensure communal harmony, security of minorities and protect government property," he said.

"Let's work together to save the country. I humbly call upon all to play their role from their respective positions to advance the country rising above mutual envy and animosity," he added.

The President's announcement comes amid chaos in Bangladesh, with Prime Minister Hasina's resignation and the army stepping in to fill the power vacuum.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) has announced a curfew from 12:00 am to 6:00 am on Tuesday and confirmed that Army Chief Wakar-Uz-Zaman will meet with student and teacher representatives soon. All government and private offices, factories, and educational institutions will reopen on Tuesday, according to the ISPR.
