Bangladesh has called for faster issuance of business visas for its nationals travelling to India and sought greater ease of doing business as Dhaka looks to strengthen economic engagement with New Delhi on the basis of what it described as an "equally beneficial" partnership.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said stronger economic ties would require greater interaction between businesses and private-sector representatives from both countries. She stressed the need for more frequent communication and easier movement of businesspeople across the India-Bangladesh border.
"Business visas for Bangladeshis should be issued more quickly so that businesspeople can travel to India more frequently," she said at a reception in Dhaka on Tuesday night, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
The remarks come as Bangladesh seeks to expand economic cooperation with India and create greater opportunities for businesses in both countries. Dhaka has emphasised the importance of developing commercial relations that provide benefits to both sides while facilitating greater private-sector participation.
Islam said businesses and private-sector stakeholders from Bangladesh and India should be able to communicate more frequently, indicating that stronger commercial interaction could help identify new areas of cooperation and expand existing trade and investment links.
Faster processing of business visas has been highlighted as an important step in this direction. Easier access for business travellers could facilitate more frequent meetings, negotiations, investment discussions and commercial exchanges between companies in the two neighbouring countries.
The call for improved ease of doing business also reflects Bangladesh's broader interest in strengthening economic engagement with India. Greater regulatory facilitation and smoother movement of businesspeople could help companies explore opportunities in sectors where the two countries have complementary interests.
India and Bangladesh share extensive economic and commercial links, with bilateral trade covering a wide range of goods. Over the years, both countries have also explored cooperation in areas including connectivity, energy, infrastructure and regional commerce.
For Bangladesh, maintaining a strong and predictable economic relationship with India remains important given the two countries' geographic proximity and interconnected markets. Dhaka has also been seeking to expand its economic opportunities by encouraging greater engagement between businesses and private investors.
The state minister's comments suggest that Bangladesh wants the private sector to play a more prominent role in shaping the next phase of bilateral economic relations. More regular interaction between businesses, she indicated, could contribute to identifying investment opportunities and addressing practical difficulties faced by companies operating across the two markets.
The emphasis on an "equally beneficial" partnership also underlines Dhaka's expectation that economic cooperation should deliver tangible advantages to businesses and consumers in both countries.
