Anwarul Azim Anar, a member of Bangladesh's ruling Awami League, has mysteriously disappeared in Kolkata.

Anar, who arrived in the city on May 12 for medical treatment, has been untraceable since May 13, according to a senior official from the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata.

Anar was staying at a friend’s residence in Baranagar, on the northern outskirts of the city. On May 13, he left to meet someone but never returned. His friend subsequently lodged a police complaint.

Despite being missing for over a week, Anar's phone has sent messages to his family indicating he had left for New Delhi, but there has been no further contact. The Deputy High Commission is actively coordinating with local police and authorities to locate the missing MP.

"We are in constant touch with the police and other authorities, the official stated, expressing concern over Anar's sudden disappearance.

MP Anar's personal assistant, Abdur Rauf, said: “Anar went to India for medical treatment on May 11. He maintained contact with his family and party members for the first two days. However, since Tuesday, all communication with him has been lost. His WhatsApp number is also unreachable.

“The family and party members are worried as they have no information on his whereabouts. The prime minister has been informed about the situation. Additionally, various high-level government offices have been notified,” he added.

MP Anwarul Azim Anar's youngest daughter, Mumtahin Ferdous Dorin, expressed concern, saying "We have not been able to contact my father for the past few days. We are worried and trying all possible ways to reach him."

Shafiqul Islam Apu, president of Jhenaidah District Awami League and former member of parliament, said "I have not heard anything about this matter. However, if it is true, it is very concerning and unfortunate. I will inform the senior authorities of the party and the government."

Kaliganj police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Abu Azif said, "I have heard about it from people. No formal complaint has been filed yet."

Anwarul Azim Anar was elected from the Awami League as MP for the Jhenaidah-4 constituency in 2014, 2018, and 2024 and served three consecutive terms.
