US President Joe Biden took a lighthearted jab at his political rival and predecessor, Donald Trump, during the annual dinner for Washington’s political and media elites. With sharp wit, Biden, 81, humorously quipped, "I am a grown man running against a six-year-old."

At the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner on Saturday night, Biden continued his playful banter, poking fun at Trump, 77, and their age difference.

Addressing the audience of nearly 3,000 journalists, celebrities, and politicians, Biden remarked, “Of course, the 2024 election’s in full swing and, yes, age is an issue: I’m a grown man running against a 6-year-old.” He went on to contrast their ages, saying, “Age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorses me.”

In a roughly 10-minute speech, Biden delivered several jokes aimed at Trump, including a reference to Stormy Daniels, a porn actress involved in a pre-election scandal. However, he also took a more serious tone, addressing Trump's recent remarks about wanting to be a dictator and seeking revenge.

Biden urged the audience to focus on the stakes of the upcoming election and move past the horse race numbers. Comedian Colin Jost provided additional comic relief at the dinner, roasting political figures in the room.

Outside the event space, demonstrators protested media coverage of the Israel-Hamas conflict and the administration’s handling of the situation.

While Biden didn’t directly address the protests or the conflict during his speech, tensions simmer as protesters called on journalists and celebrities to speak out against the violence in Gaza.

Since the outbreak of hostilities, numerous journalists have lost their lives in the region, highlighting the dangers faced by reporters covering conflict zones.

Despite the lighter atmosphere inside the Washington Hilton, the sombre reality of global conflicts underscored the importance of journalistic integrity and the role of the media in informing the public.
