US President Joe Biden has firmly rejected allegations that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. During a White House event celebrating Jewish American Heritage Month, Biden addressed guests in the Rose Garden, where he reiterated his support for Israel amidst ongoing conflict with Hamas.
Biden clarified his position by stating that contrary to the claims made by the International Court of Justice, the actions in Gaza do not constitute genocide. He emphasised the US's unwavering support for Israel, particularly in the face of threats to its security.
In recent weeks, other officials in Biden's administration have also dismissed the idea that Israel's military operations in Gaza, which have resulted in significant Palestinian casualties and a humanitarian crisis, amount to genocide.
At the reception, prominent figures like Attorney General Merrick Garland, Senator Jacky Rosen, Representative Jared Moskowitz, Representative Jamie Raskin, and Senator Ben Cardin were present. Biden acknowledged the efforts to negotiate the release of hostages held by Hamas, underscoring his administration's commitment to bringing them home.
The President has navigated a delicate balance in his stance towards Israel, consistently supporting its right to defend itself against Hamas while also urging Israel to facilitate more humanitarian aid into Gaza and to take measures to protect civilians. He reiterated his call for the defeat of Hamas and condemned antisemitism, particularly the rise of such incidents on college campuses following the October 7 attacks in Israel.
Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, who has been active in combating antisemitism, also spoke at the event. Emhoff praised Biden and Vice President Harris for their efforts to fight hate and unite the country, acknowledging the challenges faced by the Jewish community in recent months.
Biden's statements and actions reflect his administration's commitment to supporting Israel while addressing the humanitarian needs in Gaza and combating antisemitism domestically.
