US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday it will be a “big insult” to America if the coveted Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded to him, even though he has ended over seven global conflicts, as per his claims.
Trump has been long seeking the prize, lobbying hard with allies to nominate his name, and finding favour with many. The prize will be unveiled on October 10.
Making another effort to get the award, Trump said his latest ‘peace offering’ is the Gaza peace plan that was revealed on Monday along with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
On the chances that he doesn’t win the peace prize, Trump said, “It’ll be a big insult to our country. I will tell you that. I don’t want it. I want the country to get it. It should get it because there’s never been anything like it. Think of it. So if this (plan to end the Gaza conflict) happens, I think it will. I don’t say that lightly, because I know more about deals than anybody. This is what my whole life was based on”.

However, he added that he was aware he might not get it. “Will you get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing. They’ll give it to a guy that wrote a book about the mind of Donald Trump and what it took to solve the war… The Nobel Prize will go to a writer, yeah, but we’ll see what happens,” he said during a speech before hundreds of top US military officers in Quantico.
Referring to his plan to end the Gaza conflict, Trump said, “We got it, I think, settled. We’ll see. Hamas has to agree, and if they don’t, it’s going to be very tough on them. But all of the Arab nations, Muslim nations, have agreed. Israel has agreed. It’s an amazing thing. It just came together.”
The President said that if his plan, announced Monday, to end the Gaza conflict works out, he would have solved eight conflicts in as many months.
“But to have done eight of them is just like such an honour,” he said.
Republican Trump has long been irked by the fact that Democrat Barack Obama won the prize in 2009.
However, historians in Oslo think chances of Trump bagging the Nobel Peace Prize are “slim”. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has also insisted it cannot be swayed by Trump’s campaigning for the prize.
“Of course, we do notice that there is a lot of media attention towards particular candidates. But, that really has no impact on the discussions that are going on in the committee,” said Kristian Berg Harpviken, secretary of the committee.
“It’s completely unthinkable,” said Oeivind Stenersen, a historian who conducted research and co-wrote a book on the Nobel Peace Prize.
