At least 26 people were killed and 61 sustained injuries following a devastating explosion at a fireworks manufacturing facility in China’s Hunan province. The tragic incident took place on Monday afternoon at a plant operated by the Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Company, located in Liuyang—a county-level city administered by the provincial capital, Changsha.
Footage widely shared on Chinese social media platforms captured the scale of the disaster, showing extensive destruction across several kilometres. Buildings appeared severely damaged, with debris scattered over a large area, highlighting the intensity of the blast.
Emergency response efforts were swiftly mobilised. More than 480 rescue personnel, divided into five specialised teams, were deployed at the site to conduct search and rescue operations. Authorities also utilised advanced technology, including three rescue robots, to assist in navigating hazardous conditions and locating victims. Officials confirmed that the injured have been transported to nearby hospitals.

Meanwhile, a second round of search operations is currently underway as rescuers continue to comb through the wreckage for any survivors or additional victims. Given the proximity of the explosion site to two black powder storage warehouses, authorities have taken precautionary measures to prevent further incidents. Nearby residents were evacuated and a safety buffer zone was established to reduce the risk of a secondary explosion.
China, known as one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of fireworks, has long grappled with safety challenges in the industry. In response to this latest tragedy, the Ministry of Emergency Management has dispatched a team of experts to the site to oversee and guide ongoing rescue and safety operations.
Police has detained the individual in charge of the company, and an official investigation into the cause of the explosion is currently in progress. Authorities are expected to examine potential safety violations or operational lapses that may have contributed to the incident.
