Brazilian President, Luiz Lula da Silva, has alleged that the United States was involved in a coup attempt trying to topple his elected government. He said, that Washington was using its political tactics to put economic pressure on his government, though it won’t work anymore.
Speaking to workers at a party event in the country’s capital, Lula warned that Brazil will not accept unequal treatment and is ready to defend its national interests. Referring to recent US threats in which Washington threatened to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Brazil, he said, “Trying to use a political issue to sanction us economically is unacceptable,” referring to the recent attempt by ex-President Jair Bolsonaro to overturn the 2022 election results.
Meanwhile, Trump has often defended the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro by expressing open support for him. In one of the Truth Social posts, Trump called the allegation a 'witch hunt' against the highly respected Bolsonaro. Washington has also imposed sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing Bolsonaro’s case.
Lula made it clear to the United States President that Brazil is no longer dependent on the US, citing expanded global trade ties and domestic fundamentals.
“They want to end multilateralism… They want to go back to country-to-country deals where the big dominate the small,” Lula said.
“In other words, a small country negotiating with the United States is like a factory worker with 80,000 coworkers negotiating alone with the boss. The agreement is lopsided; you won’t gain anything.”
“We have size, we have posture, and we have strategic and economic interests… We want to negotiate, but we want to negotiate on equal terms,” he added.
