The Cambodian Prime Minister and acting Thai PM on Sunday thanked US President Donald Trump for mediating in the conflict that could have escalated into a full-blown war between the two neighbours over the border disputes.
Cambodia is weaker and has proposed a ceasefire with Thailand after recent escalations, as it kept losing ground and equipment to the Thai artillery bombardments and air strikes. Cambodia’s Prime Minister Hun Manet said, "I made it clear to [Trump] that Cambodia agreed with the proposal for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two armed forces."
He praised Donald Trump for his timely mediation and said his intervention will truly help protect the lives of many soldiers and civilians". On the other hand, the Thai acting PM said he was willing to consider a ceasefire but is sticking to his previous demand that dialogue with Cambodia must come first. Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai also praised Trump for his concern and expressed that Thailand agrees in principle to have a working ceasefire. Though Thailand would like to see sincere intention from the Cambodian side," the Thai foreign ministry said in a statement.

Earlier on Saturday, US President Donald Trump said that Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to stop fighting and implement a ceasefire after he sought to mediate the conflict between the two nations. He said he would not make a deal with either of the two nations if they continued fighting, yet hinted that his administration was currently looking to secure a trade agreement with both nations.
This comes a day after the Thai acting prime minister warned of all-out military conflict with Cambodia in case the fighting went on. The recent border clashes have at least left 33 people dead, with dozens more injured, and More than 110,000 people on both sides have been displaced.
