China has stepped up military pressure on Taiwan with a significant build-up of forces around the island as the conflict in the Middle East intensifies.

On Tuesday, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported detecting nine People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, three PLA aircraft sorties, and one official ship operating around Taiwan’s territory.

According to the MND, three of the aircraft sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s south-western Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ).

In a post on X, the ministry stated, "3 sorties of PLA aircraft, 9 PLAN vessels, and 1 official ship operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today.

Three out of the 3 sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ. #ROCArmedForces have monitored the situation and responded accordingly.”

The ministry added that ROC Armed Forces had monitored the movements of Chinese naval assets in the contested waters surrounding the self-governing island.

China has consistently maintained that Taiwan is an inseparable part of its territory — a position enshrined in its national laws and reiterated in official statements.

Taiwan, however, continues to function as a de facto independent democracy with its own government, military, and economic system.

Experts have warned that a possible Chinese invasion of the island could occur before 2027.

With the United States heavily engaged in the Middle East conflict, some analysts suggest Beijing might seize the opportunity to act with little or no warning. The stakes are extremely high for both Washington and Beijing.

Taiwan is a global leader in semiconductor manufacturing, supplying critical chips to the US and other nations, while China seeks control over both the semiconductor supply chain and Taiwan’s rare earth resources.
