China has strongly reacted to the Pentagon’s annual report that accuses Beijing of undermining US-India relations and deepening its defence collaboration with Pakistan so as to escalate discord among the trade partners.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, said during a media briefing on Thursday that Beijing firmly opposes the report and that its findings are misleading.

“Pentagon’s report distorts China’s defence policy, sows discord between China and other countries, and aims at finding a pretext for the US to maintain its military supremacy,” Jian said.

Chinese defence ministry spokesperson, Zhang Xiaogang, also criticised the report, denouncing its references to deepening defence and space cooperation, along with establishing a unified military doctrine, with plans to set up a military base.

The US releases these reports every year, blatantly interfering in China’s internal affairs, he said.

“The Pentagon has made serious errors while interpreting China’s national defence policy and military development. The slandering and smearing of the normal actions of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) are unfounded”, Xiaogang added, and said they “express our strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the report”.

He also cautioned Washington against constantly pushing “fabricated narratives” and “provoking confrontations and antagonism”.
Meanwhile, on the India-US ties, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said that Beijing sees and manages its relationship with New Delhi independently from a strategic standpoint and a long-term perspective.

“We stand ready to strengthen communication, enhance mutual trust, promote cooperation, and properly handle differences with India, and advance a sound and stable bilateral relationship,” he said.
