The US’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has triggered a global political firestorm, with countries accusing the Donald Trump administration of launching territorial aggression against a South American country.

China has reacted strongly to the large-scale invasion by the US of Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.

The Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement issued on Saturday that China is shocked by and strongly condemns the US’s use of force against a sovereign country and action against its president.

The ministry also said that the hegemonic acts by the US “seriously violate the international order and Venezuela’s sovereignty and threaten regional peace and security”. It added that China firmly opposes them.

The statement calls on the US to follow the rules of international law and the Charter of the United Nations and to stop violating the sovereignty and security of other countries.

China maintains friendly relations with the Latin American country. It is noteworthy that China has historically imported significant amounts of crude oil from Venezuela and provided financial support to the heavily sanctioned Venezuelan economy.

The United States and several other nations have refused to recognise Maduro as president, citing alleged fraud in the 2024 presidential elections.

While the US did not recognise the government, China sent a special envoy to Maduro’s inauguration ceremony.

Xi Jinping and Maduro also held a summit in May 2023.

China and Venezuela have deepened their economic relations and trade ties, including in the energy sector, where China has been Venezuela’s largest oil buyer.
