Beijing set to reinforce climate role with fresh pledges.

China is all set to assert its position as a global powerhouse as the country announced a new emissions-cutting plan, reinforcing its role as a firm defender of global climate diplomacy, while the EU and the US stall over fossil fuels.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has convened a mini climate summit on Wednesday, where Beijing is expected to unveil its updated "Nationally Determined Contributions".

These must be put in place before the main climate gathering, COP30, taking place in Brazil in November. Although China accounts for almost 30 per cent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, Beijing has positioned itself as a leading force in International climate talks and as a green tech Superpower.

It has strongly backed the UN process under the Paris Agreement despite the second exit of the United States. Brazil’s Ana Toni, CEO of COP30, said, "We are expecting China to continue on the right path. Let us hope that the other players will do the same as Beijing remains a stable partner.”

The importance of the country’s goals could be well understood from the fact that the Paris Climate Goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is very much dependent on China’s future goals.

Beijing has said its 2035 plan will, for the first time, cover all economic sectors and greenhouse gases. Antonio Guterres on Sunday raised alarm bells, saying that the “reduction of greenhouse emissions is failing climate goals of limiting a 1.5 degrees Celsius increase in global temperatures.”
