Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has cautioned the European Union against adopting a confrontational posture, emphasising that differences between the two sides must not be allowed to derail relations.

The remarks came during his meeting with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, in Brussels on Wednesday. The visit is part of Wang’s ongoing European tour aimed at mending strained ties, particularly on trade and security.

“China and the European Union should not be regarded as opponents because of differences, nor should they seek confrontation because of disagreements,” said Wang, according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on Thursday.

Reiterating Beijing’s position on global tensions, Wang added, “The EU is facing a lot of challenges, but not a single problem was caused by China in the past, present or even in the future.”

The comments appeared to be a direct response to Kallas, who, ahead of the meeting, expressed growing EU concern over China’s alleged role in threatening European security.

“China is not our enemy, but on the security front, its relation with the EU is facing a surge in strain,” Kallas said, accusing Chinese firms of assisting Moscow in sustaining its war against Ukraine, engaging in cyber-attacks, interfering with democratic institutions, and adopting unfair trade practices.

She further asserted, “Enabling war in Europe while seeking closer ties with Europe is a contradiction Beijing must address.”

Although China claims neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, EU officials view it as a quiet backer of Moscow. Wang, however, cast Beijing as a constructive actor and reliable partner, seeking to portray China as a balancing power amid rising protectionism from Washington.

“The path taken by the United States should not be used as a reflection of China,” said Wang. “China is not the United States.”

The Chinese Foreign Ministry noted that both sides discussed several global flashpoints, including the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the Israel-Iran ceasefire, and efforts to revive the Iran nuclear deal.

Wang stressed the importance of “mutual appreciation and respect,” urging Brussels to adopt a “more active and practical China policy”.

The Chinese minister is expected to visit Germany next, where he will hold talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. He will later travel to Paris to meet his French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot, who visited China in March.
