Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense (MND) on Sunday reported heightened Chinese military activity around the island, detecting multiple aircraft and naval vessels operating in the surrounding airspace and waters. The latest developments underscore the continuing military pressure exerted by Beijing as tensions across the Taiwan Strait remain elevated.
According to the ministry's daily security update posted on X, Taiwan detected five sorties of People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, eight People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) vessels, and two official Chinese ships operating near the island up until 6 a.m. local time (UTC+8).
The ministry stated that three of the five PLA aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, an unofficial boundary that has long served as a buffer between the two sides, before entering Taiwan's southwestern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). While an ADIZ is not sovereign airspace, it is an area where aircraft are expected to identify themselves for security purposes.
In its statement, the ministry said, "5 sorties of PLA aircraft, 8 PLAN vessels and 2 official ships operating around Taiwan detected up until 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. Three out of five sorties crossed the median line and entered Taiwan's southwestern part ADIZ. ROC Armed Forces have monitored the situation and responded."
Taiwan's armed forces said they closely monitored the Chinese military movements and responded by deploying appropriate surveillance and defensive measures. Such responses typically include scrambling fighter aircraft, dispatching naval patrols, and activating land-based missile systems to track and monitor the activities of Chinese forces.
The latest military activity follows a similar pattern observed a day earlier. On Saturday, Taiwan reported detecting five PLA aircraft, 10 PLAN vessels, and two official Chinese ships operating around the island. According to the ministry, all five aircraft entered Taiwan's southwestern and eastern ADIZ after crossing the median line, marking another significant display of Chinese military presence near Taiwan.
Earlier in the week, on Wednesday, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense also reported increased Chinese military operations in the region. Authorities tracked eight PLA aircraft sorties, seven PLAN vessels, and one official Chinese ship around Taiwan, highlighting the sustained pace of military patrols conducted by Beijing in recent months.
China has significantly increased the frequency and scale of its military operations around Taiwan in recent years, sending aircraft, warships, and coast guard vessels into areas surrounding the island on an almost daily basis. Beijing says these activities are aimed at safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while Taiwan views them as attempts to intimidate the island and undermine regional stability.

The Taiwan Strait has become one of the world's most sensitive geopolitical flashpoints. China considers Taiwan to be an inseparable part of its territory and has repeatedly stated that reunification with the island remains a national objective. Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to achieve that goal and continues to oppose any moves toward formal Taiwanese independence.
Taiwan, however, operates as a self-governing democracy with its own elected government, military, constitution, and economic system. Although only a limited number of countries formally recognize Taiwan diplomatically, the island maintains strong unofficial ties with many nations and plays a crucial role in global trade, particularly in the semiconductor industry.
The question of Taiwan's status remains one of the most contentious issues in international politics. Beijing bases its claims on historical and legal arguments, while Taiwan emphasizes its democratic governance and the right of its people to determine their own future. The dispute continues to test principles of sovereignty, self-determination, and regional security, with analysts warning that continued military activity around the island increases the risk of miscalculation and escalation in the Indo-Pacific region.
