The Pakistan-Afghanistan border region has once again erupted on Tuesday evening when Afghan forces attacked forward positions along the Durand Line in retaliation against Pakistan.
Officials said that the latest clashes broke out shortly after soldiers were breaking their fast and that the fighting was still ongoing. Sources said that the clashes occurred in eastern Afghanistan’s Nangarhar Province, in areas bordering Pakistan. They said that both sides used heavy weapons and that there were some casualties on both sides, though these were not confirmed.
Both governments have not yet issued any statement regarding the latest round of escalations. However, Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said that Afghanistan would respond to airstrikes carried out by Pakistan on Sunday.
On Sunday, an official in Kabul said that the Pakistani military had carried out air strikes using drones and aircraft on the border areas, killing 18 people and injuring five others. Pakistan officials on Sunday did confirm that they had carried out intelligence-based, targeted strikes on seven militant camps and hideouts in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border area, following a series of suicide bombings, and claimed to have killed over 80 terrorists.
However, the Afghanistan government denied Pakistani claims, saying that they targeted civilians in the latest air strikes, while Islamabad contended that it only targeted Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan infrastructure located inside Afghanistan.
