Iran carried out drone strikes against Gulf nations in retaliation for US attacks on oil facilities at Kharg Island on Sunday night and Monday morning, officials confirmed.
The attacks targeted the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, prompting immediate interception efforts by the Gulf States.
In the UAE, a drone strike caused a major fire at Dubai International Airport, triggering emergency responses.
The Dubai Media Office stated, “All necessary measures are being taken to ensure everyone’s safety,” adding that the attack impacted a fuel tank.
“Civil Defence teams continue their efforts to bring the fire under control,” it said, noting that no injuries had been reported so far.
The Civil Aviation Authority temporarily suspended flights at the airport “as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of all passengers and staff.”
Several roads leading to the airport were also closed. In Saudi Arabia, the Ministry of Defence reported intercepting 37 drones in the eastern region over the past hour and a half.
It did not specify the origin of the drones, though officials pointed to Iran. Iran’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Alireza Enayati, denied involvement, stating, "Iran is not the party responsible for these attacks, and if Iran had carried them out, it would have announced it.”
The Dubai Media Office later confirmed that Civil Defence teams had “successfully contained the fire resulting from impact to one of the fuel tanks in the vicinity” of the airport, with no injuries reported.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussed the ongoing regional developments in a phone call on Sunday.
