EAM Jaishankar Inaugurates Maldives Water Sanitation Project.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated a significant water and sanitation project in the Maldives on Saturday, funded by India. The project, valued at USD 110 million, covers 28 islands and aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities.

Jaishankar, who is in Male for a three-day official visit, conducted the inauguration virtually. He emphasised that the development partnership between India and the Maldives is designed to address the needs and priorities of the Maldivian people and government.

This partnership includes a combination of grants, loans, and training assistance, marking a new phase where these projects are coming to fruition and benefiting local communities.

Addressing the virtual event, Jaishankar highlighted the pressing issue of climate change, which poses significant challenges for small island developing states like the Maldives. He stressed the importance of addressing freshwater availability and access, which aligns with India’s domestic initiatives, such as “Har Ghar Jal” (Water to Every Home) and “Swachh Bharat” (Clean India).

Jaishankar pointed out that the project has successfully introduced safe drinking water to 32 islands and a sewerage system to 17 islands. This initiative has directly impacted the lives of approximately 28,000 Maldivians by employing the latest technologies for clean water and efficient sewage disposal. The buildings involved are also equipped with solar energy systems to support the island grids.

The EAM expressed particular optimism about how the project will benefit women on the islands, who are typically responsible for collecting clean water. He noted that the project supports the Maldives’ efforts to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals by creating climate-resilient and cost-effective water and sewerage systems.

In his address, Jaishankar underscored that the India-Maldives development cooperation embodies the spirit of the partnership, described as "Imagined by Maldives, Delivered by India." He expressed hope that this initiative would further strengthen the relationship between the two nations and contribute to their shared goals.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar met with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu to reaffirm India’s commitment to enhancing bilateral relations. President Muizzu expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian government for their continued support, highlighting the enduring partnership between the two countries in security, development, and cultural exchanges.

Jaishankar's visit is his first official trip to the Maldives since his reappointment for a second term. It follows President Muizzu's recent visit to India for the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet and Council of Ministers. This visit further strengthens the ties between New Delhi and Male, showcasing a shared vision for collaborative growth and development.
