External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a crucial meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State Council in Astana on Wednesday.
Their discussions primarily centred around bilateral relations and pressing global issues. Jaishankar highlighted India's deep concern regarding Indian nationals currently caught in the conflict zone within Russia.
In a statement following the meeting, Jaishankar expressed satisfaction with the progress made across various fronts since their last meeting in December 2023.
He underscored the urgent need for the safe and swift return of Indian citizens from the war-affected regions, a matter of significant concern for the Indian government.
The meeting also delved into assessments of the global strategic landscape, with both leaders sharing their perspectives on current international affairs. This exchange reflects the ongoing dialogue between India and Russia on crucial geopolitical matters.
Earlier in June, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the tragic deaths of two Indian nationals who were recruited by the Russian Army amidst the ongoing conflict with Ukraine. The MEA has been actively engaged in efforts to secure the prompt release and safe return of all Indian citizens associated with the Russian military.
Highlighting their diplomatic efforts, the MEA has pursued this matter rigorously through engagements with the Russian Ambassador in New Delhi and directly with Russian authorities in Moscow. These efforts are part of India's proactive stance to ensure the well-being and safe repatriation of its citizens involved in overseas employment.
Addressing the challenges faced by Indian nationals seeking employment opportunities abroad, the MEA has consistently advised caution. This advisory underscores the importance of informed decision-making and awareness among Indian citizens considering work placements in countries experiencing geopolitical tensions.
Earlier this year, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reiterated India's ongoing dialogue with Russian authorities to expedite the release and discharge of Indian nationals enlisted in the Russian military.
Responding to queries regarding individuals misled by agents and recruited into the Russian Army, Jaiswal emphasised India's steadfast commitment to securing their safe return without delay.
The meeting between Jaishankar and Lavrov marks another step in India's diplomatic efforts to safeguard the interests and welfare of its citizens amidst evolving global challenges. It underscores India's proactive engagement on international platforms to address humanitarian concerns and uphold the safety of its nationals abroad.
