External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently met with Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath in Colombo, marking Jaishankar’s first visit to the island nation since President Anura Kumara Dissanayake took office. This meeting underscores India's commitment to supporting Sri Lanka's efforts for economic recovery following a challenging period.
The discussions between Jaishankar and Herath covered a variety of topics that are vital to both countries. The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry shared images from the meeting, emphasising the cordial nature of their discussions. Herath welcomed Jaishankar warmly at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighting the importance of this bilateral engagement.
During their meeting, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s dedication to Sri Lanka’s economic rebuilding process. He expressed confidence in the partnership between the two nations and acknowledged the significance of their collaboration.
On social media platform X, Jaishankar mentioned the “wide-ranging and detailed talks” he had with Herath. He congratulated the Sri Lankan minister on his new responsibilities and noted that they reviewed various dimensions of the India-Sri Lanka partnership.
India’s commitment to its Neighbourhood First Policy and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) was a central theme of Jaishankar’s discussions.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the leader of the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party, won the presidential election on September 22. Following his victory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi promptly congratulated Dissanayake and reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s special importance in India's Neighbourhood First Policy and Vision SAGAR. This vision focuses on promoting sustainable maritime cooperation and strengthening ties in the Indian Ocean region.
