Tech magnate Elon Musk has entered the political fray with the launch of a new political party in the United States, dubbed the ‘America Party’, declaring it a move to “give you back your freedom”.
The announcement, made on Musk’s social media platform X on Saturday, comes in the wake of a widening rift between the billionaire and US President Donald Trump, culminating in Musk’s departure from both the Trump administration and the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), where he had spearheaded divisive cost-cutting initiatives.
“The way we’re going to crack the uniparty system is by using a variant of how Epaminondas shattered the myth of Spartan invincibility at Leuctra: Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield,” Musk posted on X, invoking ancient military strategy to describe his political ambition.
The tech entrepreneur, who helms Tesla and SpaceX, cast his new party as a direct response to mounting public disillusionment with America’s bipartisan political order. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,” he asserted.

The decision follows a striking poll conducted by Musk on Independence Day, July 4, asking users: “Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system! Should we create the America Party?” The result was resounding—65.4 per cent voted in favour, with 34.6 per cent against.
“Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom,” Musk wrote, framing the party as a direct product of the poll and a rising appetite for political alternatives.
Musk had previously hinted at launching a third party, reacting affirmatively to a post stating: “Elon starting a 3rd party is closely akin to Tesla & SpaceX. Low probability of success, but if successful, it will completely change the game.”
Tensions between Musk and Trump escalated sharply following the latter’s flagship legislation, the “One Big Beautiful Bill”, which cleared both chambers of Congress and was signed into law on July 4. Musk condemned the measure, claiming it could add USD 3.3 trillion to the national debt over a decade.
The billionaire’s exit from the DOGE department marked a clear break with Trump. Musk had served in an influential advisory role, directing contentious efforts to slash government jobs and reduce federal expenditure, moves that drew both applause and alarm across the political spectrum.
The 'America Party' is expected to challenge the entrenched structures of US politics in the run-up to the 2026 midterms, though Musk has yet to confirm whether he himself will stand for office.
