EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas has congratulated Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on signing a historic peace agreement with neighbouring Armenia, along with several trade agreements, at a trilateral summit in Washington, DC, according to a statement from Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.
Kallas, while noting the importance of the agreements, including the joint call for the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Process, emphasised their significance for peace and regional stability.
She expressed the EU’s willingness to support further initiatives aimed at improving bilateral ties between the two countries. The bloc is ready to assist in the future advancement of peace efforts, according to a foreign ministry statement released after a phone conversation between the two sides.
The two parties, according to the ministry, “discussed Azerbaijan-EU relations as well as regional and international security issues.”
Earlier on Monday, the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia shared the text of the peace agreement they initiated during the Friday summit.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed the historic peace deal, bringing an end to decades-long hostilities that had severed ties between the two nations.
US President Donald Trump expressed his satisfaction over the peace deal, signed in his presence at the White House on Friday.
The agreement confirms mutual recognition of borders, renounces territorial claims, bans the deployment of third-party forces along the border, and outlines steps for establishing diplomatic ties and resolving legal disputes.
