Evacuation begins in Japan as megaquake fears rise

Fearing a possible megaquake, Japan has begun evacuating residents from Toshima Island in Kagoshima after over 900 tremors rattled the region in just two weeks.

News Arena Network - Tokyo - UPDATED: July 4, 2025, 02:52 PM - 2 min read

Residents in Hokkaido brace for aftershocks after five quakes, including a 6.3 magnitude tremor, struck near the Chishima Trench within six hours on Friday, shaking Japan’s northern coastline.

With the earth beneath them trembling for days, residents of Toshima Village in southern Japan have been evacuated as fears of a catastrophic earthquake continue to mount.

The Japanese government on Friday began relocating inhabitants of Akusekijima, part of the Toshima Island chain in Kagoshima Prefecture, after a powerful series of tremors culminated in a lower-6 magnitude quake late on Thursday. The Japan Meteorological Agency noted that it was the strongest recorded in the village since comparable data began in 1919.

As seismic activity shows no signs of abating, a vessel carrying residents departed the island early Friday for Kagoshima Port, where evacuees are expected to remain in temporary shelters until further assessments are made.

The region has endured over 900 tremors in the past fortnight, leaving communities rattled and authorities wary. Speculation over a looming “megaquake” has heightened public anxiety, especially with scientific models forecasting the possibility of a large-scale tectonic event in July. Some predictions warn of as many as 300,000 potential casualties and widespread devastation should such a quake occur.

“I was so scared, I grabbed hold of my daughter. There are still children and students on the island. I'm worried about them,” said a female resident who boarded the evacuation ship.

Another evacuee recounted her fear. “It was the first time I saw an electric pole or guardrail shaking. It surprised me. It's a relief that I can now sleep without worry.”

The evacuation was carried out as a precaution, with officials advising that the displaced residents may need to remain off-island for at least a week—possibly longer, depending on seismic readings.

Toshima Village consists of several remote islands scattered across the volcanic Nansei archipelago. Due to their geographic vulnerability, these islands are especially exposed to undersea tectonic shifts and volcanic activity.

Authorities have warned that while there is no precise method to predict a megaquake’s timing, the elevated frequency and intensity of the recent tremors are grounds for maximum caution.

Japan, which lies along the volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, is no stranger to earthquakes. However, the scale and density of recent activity have left experts and residents equally concerned.

Government officials and meteorological experts are closely monitoring the situation and have assured the public that all necessary disaster protocols are being enforced.

For now, Toshima’s displaced villagers await clarity on when they may return—if at all—while Japan braces for a seismic threat that could define a generation.
