A former senior officer of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has quietly arrived in Bangladesh, with his presence drawing attention due to the absence of any official explanation regarding the purpose of his visit. Gerald P. Hamilton, a retired senior official of the CIA’s Directorate of Operations, checked into The Westin Dhaka in the Gulshan diplomatic zone early Saturday morning at approximately 6:15 am, according to intelligence sources. His stay, arranged under a booking facilitated by the United States Embassy, is scheduled to continue until July 31.
Despite Hamilton’s extensive background in clandestine intelligence work and senior leadership within the CIA, neither the US Embassy in Dhaka nor Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued any statement regarding his visit. His name also does not appear on any publicly available schedule of official meetings, leaving the nature of his trip open to speculation.
Hamilton served in the CIA for 35 years, primarily within the Directorate of Operations—the agency’s branch responsible for overseas intelligence gathering, covert operations, and the management of foreign intelligence assets. Over the course of his career, he was posted across South Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe.
He also held key leadership roles at CIA headquarters, including positions as Division Chief and Office Director. During his tenure, he was appointed by former CIA Director Leon E. Panetta as the first Director of the agency’s Employee Resource Center.
Before retiring, Hamilton received several of the CIA’s highest honors, including the Distinguished Career Intelligence Medal, the National Clandestine Service Career Medal, and two Donovan Awards for Exceptional Performance.
The timing of his visit is notable. It coincides with the scheduled arrival of Sergio Gor, the US Special Envoy for South and Central Asia, who is expected to visit Dhaka on July 29. According to reports, Gor, along with the US Ambassador, will travel to Cox’s Bazar on July 30 to visit Rohingya refugee camps.
While there is no confirmed link between Hamilton’s presence and the envoy’s visit, the overlap has added to the intrigue surrounding his trip.
In recent months, Dhaka and Washington have engaged in multiple high-level discussions on governance, regional security, humanitarian concerns, and broader Indo-Pacific developments. However, no publicly available information connects Hamilton’s visit to any specific diplomatic or government initiative.
Given his extensive experience in intelligence operations and his longstanding involvement in South Asia, Hamilton’s presence in Dhaka is likely to draw close attention from diplomatic and security observers.
