It might be the first instance in the history when a former Indian policeman is contesting for the seat of MP in the British Parliament. Nagarjun Agath, 50, who worked for 6 years in Gujarat Police and 5 years in para-military forces in India has already filed nomination as a Member of Parliament in the upcoming UK elections to be held on 4th July.
Agath, hailing from Porbandar, Gujarat—the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi—currently resides in Leicester and serves as a Councillor for the Leicester East region. His candidacy is now officially listed on the British Government's website.
After completing his schooling and college education in Porbandar, Agath, a member of the Mer community, joined India’s paramilitary forces. His postings included assignments in Udhampur, Kashmir, and at the CGO Complex Head Office in Delhi. He has a notable record of working closely with senior Indian officials. In 1995, Agath joined the Gujarat Police, serving as a Police Constable in Rajkot.
"I played a vital role in the investigation team that handled the highly controversial ‘Bhaskar Kidnapping Case’ in the region. I was also instrumental in preparing the chargesheet, which included 300 accused. The case gained nationwide attention after the son of a prominent jeweler was kidnapped by Dubai-based criminals in Gujarat," Agath recalled.
In 2001, Agath left his police job and migrated to the United Kingdom. Besides running a retail business, he also leads an organization dedicated to preserving Indian culture abroad. He frequently invites Gujarati folk artists to the UK, organizing popular shows for the Indian diaspora, particularly those from Gujarat.
These events, featuring folk songs, humor, and storytelling, have been a hit since 2015-16, boosting his popularity, especially in Leicester, which has a significant East Asian community.
"After winning the Councillor election in May 2023, I was honored with two awards in the British Parliament for my public service. Following strong encouragement from my constituents, I decided to run as an independent candidate for MP. If elected, I aim to serve the community and address their current and future issues in the best possible manner. I have received tremendous support from my family and the electorate, which comprises around 76,000 voters," Agath stated.
