Bushra Bibi, the wife of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, was granted bail on Thursday in the Toshakhana corruption case, marking a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding the couple.

Bushra, 50, was arrested nearly nine months ago in connection with the high-profile case, but Islamabad High Court’s Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb accepted her bail plea, with a surety bond of Rs 1 million.

Khan’s political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), confirmed her release through a WhatsApp message: "Bushra Bibi, the former First Lady, has been released from the prison."

She was initially taken into custody on 31 January after a court convicted both her and Khan, sentencing them to 14 years in prison.

The Toshakhana case, which has drawn widespread media attention, revolves around allegations that Khan and his wife received financial gains from the sale of state gifts from foreign dignitaries, a practice prohibited under Pakistani law.

During the bail hearing, Justice Aurangzeb questioned the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) regarding the need for further interrogation of Bushra. The investigating officer confirmed that no additional investigation was necessary, paving the way for her release.

Bushra, who is Khan’s third wife and known for her spiritual healing practices, has maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings. Her release comes as Khan continues to assert that his wife had no involvement in the alleged corruption.

Meanwhile, the indictment proceedings for both Khan and Bushra, initially set for Wednesday at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, were postponed due to security concerns.

The hearing was rescheduled to Islamabad's Judicial Complex but was once again delayed, with the new date set for 26 October.

The PTI leadership and Khan's supporters have hailed Bushra’s release as a positive step, while the legal battle in the Toshakhana case continues.
