FBI Director Kash Patel has come clean about two arrests during his younger years, disclosing that he was picked up for public intoxication in Virginia and for public urination in New York City, while he was a law student. These admissions surfaced in a 2005 letter found within his personnel file from his time at the Miami-Dade Public Defender's Office, as reported by the media.

In the letter, Patel recounted a night out celebrating with friends where they "consumed some alcoholic drinks" and later attempted to "relieve their bladders" while walking home. They were intercepted by a police cruiser and arrested. Earlier, in 2001, while at the University of Richmond, Patel was arrested for underage public intoxication. He claimed he was escorted out of a basketball game for "excessive cheering" and subsequently arrested outside the arena, though he maintained he had only had two drinks. Records indicate he was found guilty of a misdemeanour and paid a fine. At the time of the letter, Patel apologised for the incidents, insisting they did not reflect his usual behaviour.

But these notations from history have been revived after some accusations against him recently about his present behaviour. According to a statement by Erica Knight, who is Patel’s press officer, all this criticism is an attempt to tarnish Patel’s image due to his “record-breaking success” at the FBI.

The pressure on the Director intensified last week following a report, which alleged that Patel’s "excessive drinking" and "unexplained absences" had become a significant worry within the government. The report cited instances of obvious intoxication at private clubs in Washington DC and Las Vegas, which reportedly led to the rescheduling of high-level morning briefings. Most sensationally, the report claimed that security details once had to request breaching equipment to reach him behind a locked door when he could not be contacted.

Patel and his legal team have hit back with a £250 million (equivalent) defamation lawsuit, accusing the publication of acting with "actual malice" and ignoring denials provided by the Bureau. Taking a defiant stance at a recent press conference, Patel told reporters he had "never been intoxicated on the job" and challenged his critics to meet him in court. The controversy remains a flashpoint in Washington, as a video of the Director chugging beer with the US Olympic hockey team continues to circulate online, further fuelling the debate over his professional conduct.
