As many as five people were killed when an army helicopter crashed in northern Pakistan on Monday, said a government spokesperson.
The Helicopter crashed in the Diamer district of the Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) region, killing all five crew members on board. Faizullah Firaq, Gilgit-Baltistan’s government spokesperson, informed reporters.
The official said that the helicopter was being used by the provincial Gilgit-Baltistan government for relief and rescue missions following the recent rains and floods in the region.
He added that among the dead were two pilots and three members of the technical staff. The helicopter was conducting a test landing on a newly built helipad. Rescue teams had reached the crash site and began their operations.
There was no immediate word on the cause of the crash, though the Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson cited a “technical failure”.
Earlier last month, a helicopter carrying relief supplies to the flood-hit north-western Bajaur region crashed in bad weather, killing all five people on board. In September of 2024, six people were killed when another helicopter crashed down in the northwest due to engine failure.
