The death toll from heavy rains and flooding in the central Vietnam region has climbed to 43, with nine more missing, confirmed the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority on Friday.
The floods have inundated over 67,700 houses and damaged 168 others, the rescue authority said. The flooding has also damaged more than 13,000 hectares of rice and other crops, along with 88 hectares of fishery farms, which were submerged, while over 30,700 livestock and poultry were killed or swept away, it added.
The country has suffered economic losses worth more than $120 million, they said. The Environment Ministry said on Thursday that nine people were missing, increasing its death toll to 16 from seven earlier in the week. On Friday morning, it issued a follow-up statement, revising the death toll to 43.
The ministry also said that the 62,000 people had been moved from their homes for safety and that several major roads were blocked as a result of landslides. The heavy flooding has caused disruptions in the rail and road transport services in the region.
Officials said that the government-owned rail company had suspended several services linking the north and south. The water levels, according to the Environment Ministry, have risen in several affected areas across the affected region.
According to the national statistics office, natural disasters damaged infrastructure worth more than $2 billion (€1.7 billion) from January to November this year.
