Foreign ministers and high level dignitaries have begun arriving in the national capital for BRICS Foreign ministers meeting scheduled in New Delhi for May 14-15 and hosted under India’s chairmanship.
On Tuesday, the national capital played host to the arrival of Kazakhstan's First Deputy Foreign Minister Yerzahan Ashikbayev and Nigeria's Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dunoma Umar Ahmed, ahead of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting slated for May 14-15. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) extended warm welcomes to the dignitaries on social media platform X.
Among the guests who arrived on Wednesday include Russian Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov,Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, South African FM Ronald Lamola, Kazakhstan FM Yerzhan Ashibayev, Uzbekistan FM Aloyev Bakhromjon besides Deputy Foreign ministers and other diplomats. China will be represented by Xu Feihong –ambassador to India as Foreign minister Wang Yi is not attending the meeting.
MEA noted, 'Warm greetings to First Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Yerzahan Ashikbayev of Kazakhstan on his arrival in New Delhi for the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting.' Similarly, they welcomed Nigeria's Ambassador Dunoma Umar Ahmed with enthusiasm. Diplomatic efforts are underway as New Delhi positions itself as a hub of global engagement.
This year, the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting will address crucial global and regional issues. Top diplomats, including Indonesia's Foreign Minister Sugiono, reached New Delhi to partake in discussions on economic cooperation and international security. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is also scheduled to arrive, with plans for extensive talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on pertinent India-Russia cooperation matters.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has indicated that discussions will evaluate progress on accords from President Vladimir Putin's 2025 India visit. Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi will add further diplomatic weight to these high-level engagements. This gathering underscores India's strategic role as BRICS Chair, showcasing its leadership within the multilateral realm. Officially assuming the BRICS Chairmanship at the start of 2026, India continues to affirm its standing, following previous presidencies in 2012, 2016, and 2021.
The meeting will be chaired by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and will see participation from foreign ministers and heads of delegation from BRICS member and partner countries. The delegates are also scheduled to call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the visit.
According to the ministry, the foreign ministers of BRICS member nations will discuss global and regional issues of mutual interest during the two-day meeting. On the second day, member and partner countries will participate in a session titled “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”.
Another session will focus on reforms of global governance and the multilateral system, amid growing calls from emerging economies for greater representation in international institutions.The previous BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting was held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, where India participated as the incoming chair of the grouping for 2026.
BRICS currently comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa and newly inducted member countries, and focuses on cooperation across economic, political and strategic issues among emerging economies.
