The Group of Seven (G7) nations on Saturday called on both India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint as tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbours continue to escalate. The G7 urged both countries to engage in immediate de-escalation of their military conflict, emphasising the importance of dialogue.

The powerful international group, which comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, expressed its continued concern over the rising tensions, stating that they are closely monitoring the situation.

The G7 further reiterated its support for a "swift and lasting diplomatic resolution" to avoid further conflict.

In a joint statement, the G7 foreign ministers expressed their grave concerns, stressing that further military escalation poses a severe threat to regional stability.

"We, the G7 foreign ministers of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and the US and the High Representative of the European Union, strongly condemn the egregious terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan," the statement read.

The G7 nations also expressed deep concern for the safety of civilians on both sides of the border and called for immediate de-escalation. "Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability. We are deeply concerned for the safety of civilians on both sides," the statement continued.

The foreign ministers concluded by urging both India and Pakistan to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. "We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue towards a peaceful outcome," the G7 said.
