Conditions in the Gaza Strip have deteriorated to the level of the early 1950s due to the ongoing confrontation between Israel and Hamas.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini provided this assessment. He emphasised how the war has left the Palestinian economy in ruins and driven almost all Gazans into poverty.
According to recent studies, the continuous bloodshed and instability in Gaza have caused important indices of living, including health and education, to regress by around 70 years.
Lazzarini said that the protracted violence makes it difficult to get young people back to school, expressing grave concern about the long-term effects on children. The longer these issues continue, the more severe the effects will be, making rehabilitation more difficult for future generations.
The war escalated after Hamas launched a massive attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing over 1,200 Israelis and taking roughly 250 hostage. Israel responded by launching a massive military campaign against Hamas in Gaza.
The number of fatalities in Gaza has regrettably increased to 42,792 due to these continued Israeli attacks, according to the Palestinian health officials.
The humanitarian catastrophe is getting worse as the fighting rages on, and the situation is still severe. The remarks made by the head of UNRWA highlight the pressing need for international attention and action to lessen the suffering of Gaza's citizens, especially the most vulnerable groups, such as children.
Without prompt action to meet the region's humanitarian needs and restore essential services, the prospects for recovery seem dire.
