More than 5,000 young people participated in a virtual meeting where Sushila Karki, the former Chief Justice of Nepal, was chosen as the nation's top candidate for prime minister.
The online discussion initially considered Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah as a potential candidate, but participants reported that he did not respond to multiple attempts to contact him. "Since he did not answer our calls, the conversation shifted to other names," a Gen Z representative told Nepali media. Sushila Karki has received the most support.
Sources indicated that Karki was previously approached with the proposal and had requested at least 1,000 written signatures as a show of support. She has since secured more than 2,500 signatures, surpassing her initial requirement.
While Karki was the leading contender, other prominent figures were also mentioned in the meeting. Participants discussed Kulman Ghising, the head of the Nepal Electricity Authority; youth leader Sagar Dhakal; and Dharan Mayor Harka Sampang. Random Nepali, a YouTuber, also received significant support but stated that he would only accept the position if no one else did.
