Hamas accepts new ceasefire proposal

"The movement has submitted its response, agreeing to the mediators' new proposal," senior Hamas official Bassem Naim wrote in a social media post.

News Arena Network - Gaza - UPDATED: August 19, 2025, 11:38 AM - 2 min read

Smoke rises into the sky following an Israeli army air strike in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip.

A senior official of Hamas has said that the group has accepted a new ceasefire proposal for Gaza following intensified efforts to end the more than 22-month-long Invasion of Gaza.

This came after Egypt, one of the main negotiators, said on Sunday that they were working to bring an end to the conflict at the earliest. After receiving the fresh proposal from the Qatari and Egyptian mediators, backed by the United States, Hamas said it was ready for the talks with the Israeli negotiators.

"The movement has submitted its response, agreeing to the mediators' new proposal," senior Hamas official Bassem Naim wrote in a social media post. "We pray to God to extinguish the fire of this war on our people."

Before this confirmation, there was a source from Hamas that informed reporters that the group accepted the proposal "without requesting any amendments". Meanwhile, Egyptian officials said that a new proposal had been forwarded to Israel, adding that the “ball is now in its court".

Both sides have met on several occasions before, though each time one side accepted the peace proposal, the other side rejected it. On a few occasions when Hamas accepted the peace deal, Israeli negotiators demanded the amendments; on the other hand, the same process was repeated by Hamas as well, leading to a deadlock that still prevails between the two sides.

While Hamas has agreed to a new peace proposal, the Israeli side has yet to respond. Israel's war on Gaza has killed 62,004 Palestinians and injured over 150,000 people since October 2023.
