Negotiations aimed at establishing a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip are set to resume in Cairo on Wednesday. The upcoming talks will involve delegations from the three main mediators—Egypt, Qatar, and the United States—as well as representatives from Israel.

The talks, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, come after recent negotiations in Doha, where the focus was on ironing out technical details related to the ceasefire agreement. Sources have indicated that these preparations are crucial for the success of the Cairo discussions.

In Doha, intensive talks were held to finalise an agreement that includes provisions for a ceasefire, the release of Israeli hostages, and Palestinian detainees. A joint statement from the mediators confirmed that a "bridging proposal" had been put forward to both Hamas and Israel.

This proposal aligns with the principles outlined in UN Security Council Resolution No. 2735, which advocates for an immediate and thorough ceasefire in Gaza.

US President Joe Biden has expressed optimism about the potential for a ceasefire, stating that a deal is "closer than ever," although he acknowledged that a final agreement has not yet been reached.

The most recent truce, mediated by Cairo, Doha, and Washington, lasted for a week and ended in late November 2023. Since then, subsequent mediation efforts have struggled to achieve lasting results.

The current conflict, which began with Israeli military operations on October 7, 2023, has resulted in significant casualties. According to Gaza’s health authorities, over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed, and more than 92,500 others have been injured as of the latest update.
