The US embassy in India has stated that while the nation still welcomes lawful visitors, it will not put up with unauthorised entry, visa misuse, or breaking US law in the wake of the handcuffing and expulsion of an Indian student from Newark Airport. Additionally, it stated that there is no legal entitlement to travel to the US.
"Lawful visitors are still welcome in the United States. The right to travel to the United States does not exist, though. The US Embassy in India posted on X, "We cannot and will not allow illegal entry, visa abuse, or violations of U.S. law." The problem began when an NRI posted a video of the handcuffing episode on social media, claiming that the officers treated the student like a criminal.
"Last night, I saw a young Indian student being treated like a criminal, detained, and crying as they were deported from Newark Airport. He came not to harm but to chase dreams. I was heartbroken and helpless as an NRI. He wrote on X, "This is a human tragedy."
Social media user and social entrepreneur Kunal Jain claims that the student was arguing that he wasn't insane while speaking in Haryanvi and that the authorities were attempting to portray him as such. "In the morning, these kids board an aircraft after obtaining their visas. They are sent back on the nighttime flight, tied up like criminals, because they are unable to provide an explanation for their visit to the immigration authorities. Three to four of these occurrences occur each day. In recent days, there have been more of these occurrences," Jain stated.
Based on social media reports, the Indian consulate in New York acknowledged the occurrence and promised to communicate with the local authorities.
According to messages on social media, an Indian national is having trouble at Newark Liberty International Airport. In this context, we are in communication with local authorities," the Indian Consulate General in New York wrote on X. "The Consulate is steadfast in its commitment to the well-being of Indian citizens."
This coincides with the US government's stepped-up crackdown on foreign students, which involves rescinding visas without warning. The causes have varied from traffic infractions to pro-Palestine demonstrations, frequently leaving students in a legal bind and causing misunderstanding.
