Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, cancelled her planned election night address as former President Donald Trump edged closer to reclaiming the White House.
"You won't hear from the vice president tonight, but you will hear from her tomorrow," stated Cedric Richmond, co-chair of Harris's campaign, in Washington.
Trump has clinched key victories in the battleground states of North Carolina and Georgia, further complicating Harris’s path to the presidency in a tense and deeply divisive election.
The 78-year-old former president now appears well-positioned for a comeback, holding a significant lead over Harris.
The Republican Party has regained control of the Senate, successfully flipping two Democratic seats, a result that adds further momentum to Trump’s campaign.
Harris has underperformed in regions where Democrats had anticipated a stronger showing, leading her campaign to cancel a planned watch party in Washington, D.C.
Jason Miller, a spokesperson for Trump’s campaign, described the atmosphere at Trump’s base in Florida as “positive” with results tilting in his favour.
The financial markets responded swiftly to the unfolding election results, with the U.S. dollar seeing a notable surge and Bitcoin reaching record highs as investors anticipated a Trump victory.
Trump has now accumulated 243 electoral votes with Harris trailing at 194, leaving both contenders striving for the 270 votes required to secure the presidency. Trump’s recent wins in traditionally Republican states such as Florida and Texas have only widened his lead.
