In a significant development for Hezbollah, Hashem Safieddine has been appointed to succeed Hassan Nasrallah as the leader of the Iran-backed militant group. This change comes after Nasrallah was killed in airstrikes conducted by Israel on Saturday in Beirut, Lebanon's capital.
Safieddine, who is a cousin of Nasrallah, has been associated with Hezbollah since its early days and has played a crucial role in the organisation. The news of his appointment follows reports of his possible death during the same airstrikes; however, sources within Hezbollah have confirmed that he is alive. This transition in leadership marks a pivotal moment for the group, which has been under Nasrallah's command for an impressive 32 years.
Hashem Safieddine has been under the radar of U.S. authorities, who designated him as a terrorist in 2017. He has held significant responsibilities within Hezbollah, particularly overseeing the group’s political affairs and serving on its Jihad Council, which is vital for managing military operations.
His familial connections extend to the Iranian regime, as he is the father-in-law of Zeinab Soleimani, the daughter of the late Iranian military general Qassem Soleimani, further solidifying his ties to Iran.
Safieddine was born in 1964 in Deir Qanun al-Nahr in southern Lebanon. His journey with Hezbollah began alongside his cousin, Nasrallah, during the group's formative years. He has been viewed as Nasrallah's potential successor since the 1990s when he returned to Beirut from Iran after completing his studies.
As the head of Hezbollah’s executive council, Safieddine has been instrumental in managing the group's civilian operations, which encompass education and financial matters.
This role has positioned him to understand the complexities of both the political and social dynamics within the organisation. While Nasrallah has traditionally focused on strategic and military matters, Safieddine’s leadership is expected to emphasise the political realm, particularly at a time when Hezbollah faces immense challenges.
The transition in leadership also comes amidst rising tensions in the region. Israel's recent airstrikes have not only targeted Hezbollah's command structure but have also raised concerns about potential escalations in violence. Safieddine’s appointment could influence Hezbollah’s future direction and response to ongoing threats from Israel.
