Residents of Port Arthur, Texas, were advised to shelter in place on Monday evening after a massive explosion was reported at a Valero Energy refinery that sent a thick cloud of black smoke into the night sky along the Gulf Coast. The explosion was reported at about 7:22 p.m. local time, was reportedly so intense that it rattled windows and shook homes several miles away from the facility.
Valero has confirmed that the fire broke out within a diesel hydrotreater unit, which appears to have suffered severe damage. While the company stated that all personnel have been accounted for and "worker safety remains a top priority," there have been conflicting reports regarding the toll. While local officials initially recorded no injuries, later reports from those familiar with the incident suggested a few people may have sustained minor injuries.
Jefferson County Sheriff Zena Stephens has indicated that an industrial heater is the likely culprit, though a formal investigation into the exact cause is still pending. As a precautionary measure, the Texas Department of Transportation closed parts of State Highways 82 and 87 and asked drivers to avoid the area. The shelter-in-place alert is still in effect for the west side of Port Arthur, which includes Sabine Pass and Pleasure Island, with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality monitoring the air quality for the possible emission of hazardous substances.
The Port Arthur refinery is a vital part of American infrastructure, refining 435,000 crude oil barrels daily into essential fuels needed by the American public. As we are already on the edge of an oil crisis owing to the war in the Middle East, a shutdown of the Port Arthur refinery may have serious repercussions on the oil chain in the region. For now, people have been advised to stay indoors with closed windows and doors till an 'all clear' signal is given.
