The recent tensions between Israel and Iran have escalated with Israeli airstrikes targeting various military facilities in Iran. The International Atomic Energy Agency, or IAEA, has confirmed that these strikes did not affect Iran’s nuclear facilities.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that their inspectors are safe and continuing their crucial work within Iran. He emphasised the need for “prudence and restraint” to ensure the safety and security of nuclear and radioactive materials.
On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces announced that they had conducted “precise and targeted” airstrikes on multiple sites in Iran. These included missile manufacturing facilities and surface-to-air missile installations.
According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, the country’s air defense systems managed to repel the Israeli attack, resulting in only “limited damage.” This assertion reflects Iran's ongoing efforts to protect its military capabilities amid external threats.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the actions of the Israel Defense Forces. He stated that the targets were selected based on Israel's national interests rather than being influenced by the United States.
This assertion comes in response to reports suggesting that the US pressured Israel to avoid striking certain facilities, particularly oil and gas installations. Netanyahu’s office labelled these reports as “completely false,” emphasising Israel's autonomy in military decision-making.
The broader international community has expressed concern over the escalating conflict. The United States, along with the United Kingdom and the European Union, called for de-escalation following Israel’s military actions against Iranian targets. In light of these developments, Muslim countries and Russia have pointed fingers at Israel, blaming it for heightening tensions in the region.
The United Arab Emirates has also voiced its disapproval of Israel's strikes, describing the actions as deeply concerning. The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called for the utmost self-restraint to mitigate risks and prevent the conflict from spiralling out of control. This highlights the delicate balance of power and the potential for wider repercussions in a region already fraught with instability.
